International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The origins of the holiday are very important. It is believed that the holiday is associated with the “march of empty pots”. On March 8, 1857, in New York, women who worked in textile dyes protested against poor working conditions and low wages. The march got its name from the pots that women beat, demanding a 10-hour day instead of a 16-hour day, better working conditions, and equal rights for women and men.
The women continued to protest. In February 1909, New York women took to the streets again, demanding equal pay and giving women the right to vote, and opposing appalling working conditions. At that time, protests against the use of child labor were especially loud.
The following year, at the Women’s Conference, German socialists and the notorious communist Clara Zetkin, together with Rosa Luxemburg, came up with the idea that a holiday was needed that would promote equal rights for women around the world. It was decided to choose one common women’s day . Women from different countries have agreed that it is on this day that they will remind men that women must be respected.
For the first time, International Women’s Day was held on March 19, 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and some other European countries. This date was chosen by the German women.
In 1977, the UN (United Nations) declared March 8 as the Day of Struggle for Women’s Rights – International Women’s Day. This day is declared a national holiday in many countries.
