EU comes up with response to U.S. sanctions against Nord Stream 2

Vestnik Kavkaza – EU Ambassador to Russia Markus Ederer said that the European Union is developing a communiqué on measures to strengthen the financial and economic sovereignty of the EU, where response will be given to US sanctions on Nord Stream 2.

The ambassador said that the document would lay the foundation for a strengthened sanctions mechanism, which will also increase the EU’s resistance to extraterritorial sanctions of third countries.

The communiqué will be published by the end of the year, Interfax reported.

Earlier, three U.S. senators sent a letter to the operator of the German Mukran Port Fahrhafen Sassnitz GmbH, in which they threatened to financially destroy the company if the work on the Nord Stream 2 project continues.

On July 15, the U.S. Department of State published new recommendations as part of the bill on confronting Russia via sanctions. The document also covers Nord Stream-2. Restrictions apply to those who ensure construction and pipe-laying, including financial partners and vessel operators.
