Georgia marks its Independence Day

Georgia celebrates its Independence Day today, Report informs.

Georgia was declared an independent republic 104 years ago, on May 26, 1918, by the decision of the National Council.

The first Georgian democratic republic led by Noe Zhordania existed for two and a half years before the Soviet occupation. During this period, Georgia’s independence was recognized by leading European countries.

The South Caucasus country regained its independence after 70 years – on April 9, 1991.

The main events dedicated to the national holiday of Georgia will be held on Freedom Square and the central Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi. The official part of the ceremony will be attended by Georgian officials and representatives of the diplomatic corps.

As part of the event, military equipment will be exhibited and a solemn swearing-in ceremony will be held for conscripts. At 17:10 (GMT +4), the national anthem will be played throughout the country. After that, military planes and helicopters will fly over Tbilisi with the flags of Georgia and the European Union. The celebration events will end with a gala concert at Republic Square.
