Seminar: The Energy Politics of Eastern Mediterranean and Its Reflections on the Cyprus Issue
Under the umbrella and in cooperation with University of Kyrenia GUDENMER 2019, IPE Club with participation of TRNC Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. Dr. Kudret Özersay will host a seminar titled:”The Energy Politics of Eastern Mediterranean and Its Reflections on the Cyprus Issue” on 4th of December, 2019.
The issue of the hydrocarbon discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean has become an “apple of discord” and instead of becoming an opportunity to solve outstanding issues in the region, became a challenge to the peace and stability. These discoveries remain susceptible to regional conflicts arising from the fact that maritime borders between the states in the region were not demarcated before the discoveries were made, or from the way these borders overlap. The natural resources discoveries have complicated struggles and competition in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is already a junction-area of various security issues. Greece, Turkey, Republic of Cyprus, TRNC, Israel, as well as the Egypt have already declared their intents on the discoveries that can lead to sudden escalation of the tensions in the region. The Eastern Mediterranean now presents a long-term security dilemma for regional states, complicated by the convulsions of the interests of extra-regional powers.
In the light of latest developments related to the energy resources, the Eastern Mediterranean once again attracted the attention of political and academic circles. What is the main energy politics balance in the region? How did the energy politics change in the course of time? What are the main threats and opportunities? How the recent developments may reflect on the longstanding Cyprus Issue? These and other questions will be answered during the seminar.
