Iranian and Russian foreign ministers to meet in Moscow

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian arrived in Moscow atop a delegation on Tuesday evening for consultations with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on issues such as nuclear negotiations, Afghanistan, Caspian Sea status, south Caucasus region, and Mideast.

The Iranian foreign minister was received at Moscow Airport by the Russian Foreign Ministry officials and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ambassador Kazem Jalali.

The two foreign ministers’ meeting was in a series of the two countries’ foreign ministers’ regular meetings and consultations. The last such meeting was held on September 9. Lavrov had earlier invited the Iranian foreign minister to visit Moscow.

Ambassador Jalali said Amirabdollahian’s visit takes place at an official invitation by his Russian counterpart Lavrov and it is his first visit to Moscow and after Iran’s permanent membership at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

“The two sides in addition to the issues related to bilateral ties will consult the latest developments in the region and at the international scene, and this meeting, keeping in mind the recent developments in Caucasus region and Afghanistan, is evaluated as having great significance, since experience shows that Tehran-Moscow interactions have contributed to restoration of regional peace and stability.” Added Jalali.

The Russian Foreign Ministry communique on the visit said that the two sides will pay special attention to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) issue, the status in Afghanistan, and appropriate response to the terrorist and drug trafficking threats, and the international contributions to construction of Afghanistan after the settling down of the political developments there.
