Turkmenistan increases production and export of fruit and vegetables

Last year, agricultural producers of Turkmenistan harvested rich yields of fruits and vegetables. The private sector has played an important role in strengthening the potential of the agricultural sector and realization of the Government programs of import substitution and export orientation, the state-run Newspaper Golden Age reports.

According to the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, the largest part of food production was grown by private farms and entrepreneurship structures. In 2019, they produced more than 26,000 tons of tomatoes, 14,500 tons of cucurbitaceous crops, more than 7,000 tons of fruits and berries, and 6,400 tons of leguminous crops.

Turkmen agricultural entrepreneurs work to increase food production volumes by developing new lands, expanding areas under gardens and vineyards, and building new greenhouses. This creates conditions for saturation of local market and growth of export. In particular, agricultural production worth more than 25 million US dollars was exported to Russia and other CIS countries in 2019.

Exports of tomatoes significantly increased in 2019, reaching 16,000 tons. Many farms specialize in year-round indoor cultivation of tomatoes using innovative technologies of plant care.

Significant part of Turkmen fruits and vegetables is exported to the CIS countries.

Turkmen entrepreneurs also increased the production of confectionary and other food products last year.

Turkmen confectionary is in big demand in neighboring Afghanistan, and Turkmen ice cream is exported to China.
