By Asya Geydarova /Sputnik News/ – Previously, Moscow, Baku, and Yerevan issued a joint statement, declaring the end of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The new agreement stipulates deployment of almost 2,000 Russian peacekeepers in the region in order to ensure that the clashes will cease.
The statement was published after Azerbaijan claimed control over Shushi (Shusha), a key city in the region.
In the meantime, unrest continues in the Armenian capital of Yerevan after a new ceasefire statement was adopted. Protesters stormed the government headquarters on early Tuesday, smashing windows and furniture inside and demanding the Armenian prime minister to resign.
Media reports said thousands of people gathered in the centre of the city, while other protesters forced their way into the government headquarters, smashing windows and damaging the furniture inside. Meanwhile, a Sputnik correspondent said President of National Assembly of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan was beaten up by protesters, who demanded Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation.
According to Pashinyan, there was no other way than to sign the joint statement on ceasing hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. Under the deal, Azerbaijan and Armenia will stop at their current positions, will exchange prisoners and allow for Russian peacekeepers to be deployed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
