Republic of Moldova: 28 Years of Independence

Today marks the 28th anniversary of the independence of Moldova. According to tradition, the holiday began with the laying of flowers at the symbol of Moldavian statehood – the monument to Lord Stefan the Great.

The leaders of the state gathered on the square of the Great National Assembly joined by heads of diplomatic missions and military personnel.

“I think everyone understands that 28 years is only the beginning. I am proud that we have got the independence. In those early 1990s, 28 years ago, my parents participated here in this square of the Great National Assembly. I know that most of your parents participated. There are different opinions: was it good or was it bad? I think that is good. It’s good that we have achieved this, ”said President of Moldova Igor Dodon.

“The main thing is that free citizens can celebrate Independence Day today. So, as it should be in a democratic society. We must thank those people who had the courage, so that today, we rejoice in independence. Of course, there is still a lot of work to be done for the prosperity of the state. Today we sincerely congratulate all citizens on this holiday, ”said the Prime Minister of Moldova, Maya Sandu.

Independence Day in Moldova has been celebrated since 1991. Then the parliament of the republic adopted the Declaration of Independence, following the example of Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine and the Baltic countries.
