Arab League restores Syria’s membership in organization

Syria’s membership in the Arab League was determined to be reinstated on Sunday after a 12-year ban.

At a press conference in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry announced that foreign ministers from the Arab League had decided to restart allowing delegations from the Syrian government to attend League meetings.

Following a gathering of Arab foreign ministers in the Egyptian capital, the decision was made.

Syria’s readmission to the pan-Arab organization was acknowledged by Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

Aboul Gheit said at the same press conference that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Iraq had established a follow-up committee to monitor progress toward a resolution of the Syrian conflict.

“The reestablishment of normal relations between Syria and Arab countries is a sovereign decision for each country,” he continued.
