Turkey to attend OIC summit after Trump’s Middle East peace plan

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will attend the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)’s ministerial meeting in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah, the foreign ministry said.

“Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will attend the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Emergency Open-Ended Executive Committee Ministerial Meeting to be held in Jeddah on 3 February 2020 upon the request of the State of Palestine in order to discuss the most recent developments with regard to Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the ministry said in a statement.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Jan. 29 revealed the long-awaited plan, which promises to keep Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital, proposes an independent Palestinian state and the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements.

But, Turkey blasted the peace plan, calling the agreement “an annexation plan aiming at usurping Palestinian lands and killing two-state solution”.

The Turkish government, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been an outspoken critic of the Israeli government. And, Erdoğan on Jan 31 criticised Saudi Arabia and several Gulf countries for remaining silent about the U.S. proposal.
