On July 19, the presidents of Iran, Russia, and Turkiye discussed the current situation in Syria at the Astana summit held in Tehran, APA’s Tehran bureau reports.
During the summit, the heads of state reviewed international and regional events and emphasized the leading role of the Astana process in the peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis. At the summit, the presidents of the three countries expressed their determination to continue cooperation in the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism.
The presidents of Iran, Russia, and Turkiye emphasized that they will be determined in the fight against the separatists, who aim to weaken the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. Assessing the situation in northern Syria, they noted that achieving security and stability in the region is possible only with Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The heads of state reiterated their determination to continue existing cooperation to destroy all terrorist groups. They also demanded the protection of the civilian population and civilian infrastructure in accordance with international humanitarian law.
In the statement released at the end of the summit, it is noted that the 3 countries agreed to make more efforts for the normalization of the humanitarian situation. The presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkiye expressed their deep concern about the humanitarian conditions in Syria and all unilateral sanctions against international law, international humanitarian law and the Charter of the United Nations, calling discriminatory measures unacceptable. At the summit, it was noted that there is no military solution to the Syria conflict, it can only be solved politically with the help of the UN in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254.
The need to continue the operation of mutual release of prisoners/hostages, to return refugees and internally displaced persons and to support them was emphasized within the framework of the relevant working group in the Astana process.
At the summit, the presidents of the 3 countries also announced their determination to strengthen trilateral coordination in various fields in order to increase joint political and economic cooperation in addition to the Syria issue.
