Cuban Referendum

New Constitution with Old Ideals

The results of the referendum on the approval of the new constitution in Cuba held on February 24, became known on Monday evening. 73.3% of all voters on the lists answered affirmatively to the question “Do you ratify the new constitution of the republic?”.

Thus, Cuba adopted a new constitution: it replaced the document adopted in 1976. The new fundamental law of the country legalizes private property and business, lifts the ban on dual citizenship, introduces the positions of president and prime minister, limits the term of office of the head of state to two 5-years terms. However, the one-party system and the monopoly of power over the media remain unchanged. Insufficient changes were actively criticized by American politicians and the Cuban opposition, but concessions were not made.
