Iranian Foreign Ministry officials meet Syrian President al-Assad

IRNA – Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s top assistant Ali Asghar Khaji met and conferred with Syrian President in Damascus Bashar al_Assad on Monday on bilateral cooperation and regional developments.

According to the Syrian official news network SANA, the two countries’ strategic relations and the important role played by joint commissions in strengthening comprehensive bilateral ties, especially in the economic field were the main topics of discussion in this meeting.

Veteran diplomat Khaji in his meeting with President Assad in particular surveyed the agenda of the upcoming Astana Conference as well as the continuation of efforts aimed at achieving positive results in favor of the Syrian nation, and also the significance of pursuing the achievement of the Syrian Committee to Survey the Constitution, free from any type of foreign intervention.

President Assad in the meeting congratulated the successful holding of the Islamic Republic of Iran Presidential Elections and reiterated that Iran’s success in that respect was another severe blow against the entire forces that try to breach Iran’s national security.

Khaji, too, emphasized: Broad turn out of the people at the Syrian Presidential Elections, had no message, but an obvious meaning that was the might of Syrian people’s will.

He meanwhile announced Iran’s interest in having a prominent role in the process of reconstruction of Syria, as well as partnership in contributing to the revival of the Syrian economy in various fields, aimed at decreasing the heavy burden of the oppressive western sanctions that has fatigued the Syrian nation.

Also present in the meeting there were Deputy Syrian Foreign Minister Bashar al-Jaafari, President Assad’s Special Consultant Bathina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign Minister Iman Susan, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ridvan Lutfi, and the Iranian ambassador to Damascus.
