What are the countries investing in the natural gas shares that Greece aims to own in the Eastern Mediterranean?, BAAM Academic Coordinator Dr. Haşim Türker elaborates on this question in his Twitter

In his Twitter, BAAM Academic Coordinator Dr. Haşim Türker has shared an unique view on the events in Eastern Mediterranean

The independence of Greece was a result of the process that started with the 1821 uprisings and ended with the Edirne and Constantinople/Istanbul Treaties in 1829 and 1832 respectively.

Undoubtedly, Britain, France and Russia (Russian Empire) played important roles in this process.

It was the period when capitalism began to flourish and even stocks for Greek Independence were issued on the London Stock Exchange, one of the world’s leading stock exchanges. At that time London Stock Exchange has issued a participation share and those countries has invested. However, during the period when Greece opted for its independence, they started to lose, thus, making intervention in Ottoman Empire inevitable.

Thereupon, the navy formed by England, France and Russia has caused a heavy loss of the Ottoman navy in Navarino in 1827. The most important consequence of that was the independence of Greece.

After gaining its independence, Greece expanded continuously and this expansion was mostly due to the support of the Western Great Powers.

However, Atatürk and the War of Independence have put an end to the uncontrolled appetite for expansion of Greece, supported by Great Powers.

Today, Greece wants to continue this eternal habit in a different medium. The demands of the Exclusive Economic Zone in the Eastern Mediterranean that do not comply with the principle of equity or international law are also a reflection of this bad habit.

The important question Dr. Haşim Türker rises here is: What are the countries investing in the natural gas shares that Greece aims to own in the Eastern Mediterranean, and will these countries afford to support Greece enough to make a new Navarino attempt?
