‘UN remains committed to protecting refugees,’ says Guterres

PL English – The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres remains committed on Thursday to doing everything possible to end the conflicts and persecutions, which leads to a high figure of refugees.

This was indicated on Thursday by the deputy spokesperson of the head of the United Nations, Farhan Haq, and highlighted how the Covid-19 pandemic now represents additional threats for those already vulnerable people.

Nearly 80 million women, children and men worldwide have been forced to leave their homes as refugees or internally displaced persons, including 10 million people just in the past year, he said.

According to the UN secretary general, refugees and displaced persons also stand out among those taking a step forward to make a difference on the front-line of the fight against the pandemic.

Therefore, Guterres called on the international community to remain united and in solidarity with those communities, as well as to recognize the fundamental obligation to protect those fleeing war and persecution.

In this regard, indicated Haq, Guterres recognizes the generosity and humanity of host communities and countries that, despite struggling with their own economic and security concerns, welcome refugees and displaced persons.

On June 20, World Refugee Day will be commemorated, a date that coincides with the anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.
