Northern Cyprus to reopen Cypriot ghost town of Varosha

Northern Cyprus is gearing up for the reopening the abandoned town of Varosha, TRNC Prime Minister said on Friday.

TRNC Prime Minister and UBP Presidential Candidate Ersin Tatar made some statements on the “ghost” town of Varosha, where inventory and infrastructure works has been completed and noted that “Varosha is most definitely going to be opened.”

Prime Minister Tatar participated in the joint live broadcast of TRT and BRT and said, “Varosha is most definitely going to be opened. The tide has shifted, a new page has been turned“

Although, Tatar did not specify any timeline for reopening Varosha.

While referring to Northern Cyprus, he said, “Varosha lies within TRNC territory,” he said. “Nobody can take it from us. We are successfully continuing on our path. The inventory work is almost complete, we are in the opening phase.”

APPROXIMATELY 300 APPLICATIONS HAS BEEN MADE AND WILL BE EVALUATED

Tatar also stated that nearly 300 applications have been made to the Immovable Property Commission and assured that all applications will be evaluated, expressing that the rights of property owners will be restored in accordance with regulations.

In February, a round table meeting has been held in Maraş/Varosha with participation of TRNC Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay, Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay and Minister of Justice Abdul Hamid Gul and other senior officials from the two countries. Presentations were made during the meeting to determine a political and legal road map for the opening of Maraş/Varosha, which were attended by some academics, civil society managers, experts and lawyers.

Varosha is a southern quarter of the Cypriot city of Famagusta, has been closed since the second peace operation on the island.
