Japan’s parliament on Wednesday re-elected Fumio Kishida as prime minister after his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won general elections in the country last month, local news reported

Kishida, also the leader of the LDP, was elected Japan’s 100th premier early on Oct. 4 before calling for general elections.

A special session of the House of Representatives of the Japanese parliament was convened on Tuesday to re-elect Kishida, reported Kyodo News.

The LDP is supported by junior coalition partner Komeito in the parliament.

“In a short period of time, the government has pushed forward policies with speed,” said Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.

The coalition partners also agreed to give out cash and vouchers for $886 to all children aged 18 or younger as Japan is struggling with a weakened economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
